China said it "firmly opposes" the U.S. investigation into its maritime, logistics and shipbuilding industries, calling the move a "mistake on top of a mistake." In an official statement late Wednesday, China's ministry of commerce said the U.S. provides hundreds of billions of dollars in "discriminatory" subsidies to its domestic industries, "yet accuses China of adopting so-called 'non-market practices.'" "In fact, the development of China's industries is the result of companies' technological innovation and active participation in market competition," the Chinese ministry said. On Wednesday, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative initiated a probe into China's maritime, logistics and shipbuilding industries, alleging that Beijing used "unfair, non-market policies and practices" to dominate these sectors. "By launching a new Section 301 investigation, the U.S. is making a mistake on top of a mistake," the China's commerce ministry said.

Attorneys for Donald Trump have asked a judge for a "significant" delay of his fast-approaching criminal hush money trial, arguing the Republican presidential nominee cannot get a fair jury due to "prejudicial pretrial publicity." The trial on charges of falsifying business records must adjourn until that press coverage "abates," Trump's lawyers wrote last week in a filing in New York Supreme Court. Those posts came after Judge Juan Merchan imposed a gag order barring Trump from speaking about likely witnesses and other figures involved in the case. Trump in a slew of recent Truth Social posts has called for Merchan's recusal from the case, accusing him of political bias. But in their court filing requesting a trial delay, Trump's lawyers argued that it was the press, not the former president, tainting the jury pool.

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Monday raised concerns about efforts to ban Chinese-owned social media app TikTok in the U.S., saying it would only serve to empower Meta's Facebook platform. "Without TikTok, you can make Facebook bigger, and I consider Facebook to be an enemy of the people," Trump, who was formerly U.S. president between 2017 and 2021, said in a CNBC TV interview on Monday. Acknowledging his concerns around national security and data privacy over TikTok, Trump said "there's a lot of good and there's a lot of bad" with the platform. China's National Intelligence Law of 2017 requires organizations and citizens to "support, assist and cooperate with the state intelligence work." In 2020, the Trump administration unsuccessfully tried to have TikTok removed from app stores in the U.S. due to these concerns.
